Too often violent and disturbing events like that of January 6th are used as a surveillance and policing power grab disguised as increased safety measures to protect public safety. Decades of misguided policy-making, forced through Congress in the aftermath of a crisis, has led to the expansion of policing and surveillance tools that are ultimately used to undermine the privacy and civil rights of Black and brown communities. The police’s failure to protect people during the attack at the Capitol was not due to a lack of resources or authorities but instead, because they have for decades used their power to target racial justice activists while disregarding the rising threat of violent white supremacy.

Join MediaJustice, ACLU, and Free Press as we bring together a panel of activists and experts who represent communities targeted by law enforcement, including the FBI, to urge Congress to do more to protect Black and brown communities instead of harm us.

This event will include live captioning and ASL interpretation.
